I recently installed an ubuntu desktop (Hoary) for this kid who has an Ipod flash thingy (with some nifty name to match, I can't remember). We were looking at gtkpod, which indeed supported his ipod. But he didn't like it enough, because he was used to ITunes. slightly disappointing, until I started op Rhythmbox. I'm not sure whether it works on its own, or maybe you need gtkpod for it, but I looks like Itunes (never knew that myself :P) and sure enough, it supported his ipod with no problem at all. Just my 2 cents.

Has your wife tried gtkpod for her iPod? I don't have a single windows machine in the house, and my iPod is probably my favorite possession, behind, of course, my desktop. gtkpod does the trick for me, and with udev it's almost a no brainer to get it going, almost.
