A very interesting link today, from a former Mac advocate who’s recently jumped ship entirely to Linux, mostly due to the Apple community. While I’m not a huge zealot in any real direction, I believe I can appreciate this. My experience with the software and hardware has been mostly reasonable, barring a few usability quirks that I find odd (why can’t I close a program with one click? WHY?).

From the article…

It has been my experience that the Mac “community” (ie, the most vocal and active of the Macintosh enthusiast and power users) tend to be incredibly negative and expect much more than they deserve.

I hate to say it, but that’s darn near my experience as well. Supporting the few Mac users we have here at work is a chore, as they expect white glove treatment when they have the smallest issues. Recently we discovered a problem with saving to AFP volumes on the network from Adobe products, causing them to crash. Turns out the problem was a known issue to Apple (and was patched in 10.4.7, thankfully) but when you tried telling the users this, it became an enormous issue of how we were somehow incompetent, and they wanted to call in an external consultant for outrageous billable hours. Yes, let’s start getting attitude rather than saving to the desktop and dragging the document to a folder. Perish the thought.
It just seems to happen this way.

Anyhow, welcome to the fold, Bryan, we’re happy to have you. And now the plans I had to move my wife over to a Mac Mini are on indefinite hold. She’s likely going to end up with a Dapper install and a Windows boot volume just so she can play The Sims when she needs to, and life will be a lot simpler from here on out.

Update:

Jorge’s being whiny, so here’s a link to their podcast.
